Ofrendas y Tepates

This amazing ofrenda (altar) was at a wonderful store containing beautiful Oaxacan arts and crafts.  In the foreground is a tepate (sand painting) depicting pre-Columbian images.  A close up gives better detail.  These sand paintings are traditional for Dia de Los Muertos.  We were told that the traditional burial occurs within three days.  The body of the deceased is at home for one night with family and friends attending to the body, then the funeral providers take the body to be prepared for burial.  A tepate is created for the deceased, depicting something of their life or something that honors them.  An altar is made in the home to honor the person.  All of these are opportunities for connection, ritual and processing grief with strong support from the community.

The tepates depicted in some of these pictures were at the Plaza de la Danza near the Soledad Church.  They were at least twenty feet square if not larger.  Six of them in this square.  Each evening of the Dia de Los Muertes celebrations there were dancing and music presentations here.
